Microbor Tools
- Cutting at twice the speed, twice as deep, heat removed in swarf
Compared to other CBN metal cutting inserts Microbor inserts enable:
Increased machining productivity, cutting tools run faster, cut deeper and more accurately,
Saving tooling costs at the same time
We are delighted to introduce a new range of cutting inserts - a breakthrough from Microbor – now the global metal cutting technology leader.
Microbor (www.microbor.com) has developed its proprietary polycrystalline cubic boron nitride materials processing and production technology as well as perfected its final products range of metal cutting inserts over the last 8 years. Microbor tools are produced using sintered and hot pressed Polycrystalline Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN) and Nano Polycrystalline Cubic Boron Nitride (NCBN). This is a revolution in the age-old tool making industry.
Microbor is one of a very few companies worldwide which has its own powder sintering technology, among De Beers (Element 6), Sumitomo Group, GE and other major names. Microbor tools are manufactured using world class materials scientific know how, the company controls the production cycle at every stage from powder synthesis, agglomerate sintering, through milling & cutting, to tool application engineering and final manufacturing. Microbor guarantees delivery of state of the art solutions to its clients, at a better price in comparison with other cubic boron nitride (CBN) cutting inserts.
As a demonstration of quality and performance the comparative test results between Microbor CBN cutting inserts and cutting inserts made of CBN from other producers are available on request. Video demonstrations are viewable at: ftp://incoming:incoming@ftp.mt-d.ru/microbor_media.zip.
Microbor Cubic Boron Nitride tools have outstanding material properties:
Unique impact resistance - Enhanced Heat resistant (up to 1500 °C) - Extended wear resistance
The combinations of these three properties for different materials are shown in the graph below, which clearly demonstrates the superiority of the Microbor metal cutters and finishers.
Machine Tool Material Comparison

Carbide 250
Microbor CBN and NCBN technology enable the productivity of hard material machining operations to be greatly increased. Microbor Tools produced using unique patented technology can run faster, remove more material from component blanks, require less finishing, so components can be machined quicker. The end user benefits from:
Extreme hardness: complete range of materials can be machined starting at diamond hard through to polymer reinforced composites. The hardness ensures maximum tool wear resistance;
High strength at elevated temperatures enables Microbor Tools to cut through far greater thicknesses of materials during machining, greatly increasing throughput;
Fineness of NCBN Microbor nano-particles means an equivalent fine finish of machined components which minimizes or eliminates the need for final finishing;
Extreme impact resistance means rough / asymmetrical, heterogeneous blanks can be machined at high speed with a single tool;
Extreme heat resistance allows machines to be run above the usual critical speeds. Heat is carried away in the swarf leaving the component cool enough to handle and minimizing any thermal distortion or modification of the materials properties.
Microbor cutting tools are used for machining different hard-to-machine materials, including cast iron, hardened steel, sintered powdered alloys and other metals. Please see attached brochure for further details as well as recommended set up data for machining centres running Microbor metal cutters.
Applications of Microbor cutting tools include premium performance cutting, including turning and milling operations during rough shaping, semi-finishing and final finishing.
Three main types of Microbor Tools product lines are:
Heavy Duty Tool – Microbor Heavy
Made of CBN, For rough cutting and semi-finishing, includes tipped and solid range* ,
Medium Duty Tool – Microbor Classic
Made of CBN, For finish and semi-finishing, includes tipped and solid range* ,
Fine Duty Tool – Microbor Classic
Made of CBN or NCBN
For final cutting / finishing when high tolerance’s are required, includes tipped and solid range, availability and price on request
* please see attached brochure for full details
In addition to these superior CBN cutting inserts, Microbor Nano Polycrystalline Cubic Boron Nitride (NCBN) has been developed specifically for finishing operations. NCBN’s sub-nano size matrix increases hardness of the material to 7 – 8000 MPa, compared to hardness of up to 4000 MPa for the 1 to 6 micron matrix of CBN. NCBN is the only material which is as hard or harder than synthetic diamond (diamond: 6 to10 000 MPa). This ensures an even greater competitive advantage of Microbor tools for finishing machining operations in comparison with CBN cutting inserts produced by other companies.
A few leading vendors (Sandvik, Kennametal, Iscar, GE, TaeguTec) specialise in Cubic Boron Nitride cutting tools. To date there is no other commercial nano sized composite boron nitride tool production in the world other than Microbor.
Microbor’s latest metal cutting tool development for final finishing has resulted in a significant investment by the Russian Corporation of Nanotechnologies (RUSNANO) (http://www.rusnano.com/Home.aspx). RUSNANO was established by the Russian government in 2007 managing a U$ 5 billion investment portfolio for stimulating development, creating and strengthening infrastructure and realizing the potential of nanotechnology. The investment was announced on the RUSNANO website on the 18th of September 2009 (http://www.rosnano.ru/Post.aspx/Show/20124).
To date, Microbor has been active in the world’s fastest growing market, China, where its superior products are sold at a lower price to competitive offerings.
Microbor has now decided to expand its operation and has commenced the process of creating a strong European distribution chain, as of January 2010; Alchemie Technology is the first dealer to be appointed in the European region to distribute Microbor cutting tools.
Microbor acts not only as a tool manufacturer but also as the developer of complex technological “turn-key” solutions for difficult or traditionally “unsolvable” cutting and finishing operations, this usually includes the following phases:
• Assessment and assistance in technical specifications preparation,
• Analysis and technology engineering including:
Technical: Development of general technical report, which incorporates cutting tool specification, tooling specification, Cutting data calculations,
Economical: Forecasting the benefits from implementing the new technology,
• On site implementation until the forecasted and agreed targets are achieved strictly within required timeframe,
• Technology and application training for customer’s technologists and operators,
• After sales support – hot-line and on-site.
Microbor realises the importance of technical support for its clients and has set up an “Implementation and Technical Support Centre” (ITSC) - a team of highly competent materials scientists, engineers and metalworking technologists, which can provide all the necessary assistance during the development and implementation of the technical solution using Microbor cutting inserts.
